Pigeon Racing Club
On Friday evenings, in August & September, members of the Orillia Pigeon Racing Club prepare their young birds to be transported to various destinations. Once the birds have been registered and chipped, they are taken by truck, along with birds from other racing clubs, to a place where they will be released on Saturday morning. The first race is the shortest, but, as the weeks progress, the distance gets farther. All the birds, sometimes as many as 1,500, are released simultaneously, and the chip on their leg records the time that they return to their loft. The members meet again on Saturday to go over the computerized race results. If you are interested in getting more information about this wonderful hobby, contact Mike van der Jagt at 705-326-5812, or, go to www.crpu.ca . By the way, neither show nor racing pigeons pose any health risk to humans greater than the risk of keeping dogs, cats, turtles, hamsters, exotic birds or any other living pet.
